A largely undiscovered area of France. It is an unspoilt area of mountains, woods, plateaus, lakes, waterfalls and pastures and is renowned for
its natural beauty. The Doubs valley is well known for its caves and stunning waterfalls and the Vallee de la Loue for for top-quality
water sports including rafting and canoeing.
The castles at Joux and Besançon are important tourist destinations.

Besancon
Besancon is the capital of the Franche-Comte region. Besancon was once known for clock-making but today the main industries are
metallurgical, textile, and food-processing. It is especially famous for its clock and watch manufacturers and its watch school is
world renowned.
Although Besancon was bombed during World War II, many old monuments and buildinds remain. These inlcude Roman ruins, a cathedral
and numerous buildings in Spanish Renaissance style, notably the Palais Granvelle (birthplace of Cardinal Granvelle, now housing a museum)
and the imposing town hall. Besancon stages a famous music festival every September lasting for two weeks
