Mayenne is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It constitutes the western part of the former province of Maine.

Mayenne is part of the current region of Pays de la Loire and is surrounded by the departments of Manche, Orne, Sarthe, Maine-et-Loire, and Ille-et-Vilaine.

Laval

Laval is located on the River Mayenne in the region called the Pays de la Loire in north-west central France (around the Loire Valley). It is the centre of an urban area of about 100,000 inhabitants.

The town is historically a manufacturer of fine linens. There are foundries. Laval is also home of the Laval and Mayenne Technology Park where firms working in electronics, computing and peripherals, food technology, veterinary pharmaceuticals, virtual reality, audiovisual productions, patents etc, marketing and a resource centre are all to be found in modern buildings.
